Reasons to travel to Pskov
Often referred to as the Town of Purling Waters, Pskov is a unique historic destination in Russia. Here are some brief facts: the year of founding — 903, population — 202.780: an interesting fact — in March 1917, the last Russian tsar abdicated his throne in this city.
The first historical mention of Pskov was in the wedding record of Igor of Kiev to St. Olga in 903. Located on the crossroads of trade routes, Pskov was the open gate to Russia for foreign merchants, and the largest partner for the Hanseatic Union.
Pskov is a unique fortress city. It was the strongest fortress on the western border of Russia. The total length of 5 fortification ring-walls comprised 9.5 kilometers. This fortress used to be one of this kind in the entire Europe. The strongest tower of the Pskov fortress Pokrovskaya (the Tower of the Protecting Veil) is impressive. It is a hard task to find a stronger European tower: it has a circuit of 90 meters; it is over 50 meters tall, and its walls at the foundation are 6-meter strong.

Karelia — the Beautiful Land of Lakes
Karelia is rightly called “Europe’s lungs”: more than half of its territory is covered by taiga and tundra forests; the rest is a dense network of more than 27 thousand rivers. Karelia has about 60,000 lakes, including the two largest lakes in Europe — Ladoga and Onega. A wonderful landscape of blue lakes with crystal clear water, magnificent waterfalls and healing springs, hillocks and barren rock and dense forests attract more and more visitors from the overpopulated regions of both Russia and Western Europe every year, giving them a great chance to enjoy virgin northern European nature.
Among the most popular “attractions” in Karelia are the nature reserves and national parks. A large part of Karelia’s land is under special preservation control.
It is home to a wide variety of old Russian churches and monasteries. The island archipelago of Valaam with its ancient stone monastery from the 10th century is part of the living history of the Byzantine culture.
